    ...and then again, there are days like this. I wonder if it's possible sometimes to have too many personnel and apparatus on scene, especially in a very congested area? I'm thankful there were no deaths or injuries associated with this incident. Our small paid department of 3 shifts with 6 personnel (5 if someone is on vacation) on each, has any fire "on their own" until nearby mutual aid units roll in. Even so, M/A will be minutes out. Two engines and six personnel for the first 8 to 12 minutes (no RIT) is pushing it and we do a lot of offensive attacks. Firefighting is different all across this nation and no one method will work for everyone or every time. Firefighters (like me) have the advantage of watching a video like this and comparing it to what we (or our department) would have done.......but I wasn't there and it's not fair for me to critique them. We DO however, have a debrief or critique after an event to see how we can do the next job any safer, more efficiently, etc. Every structure fire, medical call, rescue, etc. needs to go through that process, it's how we better ourselves.

    I would start with rig placement. Either the engine or the ladder needs to take the front. In this case neither did. I would have run the deck gun, solid stream into that fire, off the engine, while the rest of the folks get a 2 1/2 in service, get a water source secured. . It was really not a especially bad fire with containment to the original firehouse. Just need to get the wet stuff on the red stuff. Look at it. The red stuff is RIGHT THERE. Begging to get knocked down. Lots of erratic movement on scene with seemingly few having clearly defined jobs on arrival. But look how quickly thigs changed when they get water on the fire. They kept it to the building of origin, best I can tell. Thats a huge win. The old firehouse was a total loss on arrival is my guess. No reports of people inside. So the fact that it took a bit longer to get the water flowing is a non issue. My guess is, like most, the crews have looked at the footage and are working to get batter at the craft. Just my thoughts.

    I need to ask a genuine question since I am not familiar with the goings-on in Shamokin these days, but does Friendship's engine not still have a 1,000 gallon booster tank to put a handline into service until they are able to get hydrant connection, or are things that bad across the bureau right now maintenance-wise? On this note I am assuming they don't train on the pump often with how rusty the first 50 gallons was. This whole thing just looked really bad for them.

    • @FDNY8231

    I'll tell ya, it takes FAR too long for these guys to get water on the fire. Over and over on these vids I see it. There has to be another way. Don't hand me that "this is the best way to do it" nonsense either. There should be some sort of system where within a few seconds of the truck stopping a line is charged and put into action. Do not tell me it can't be done.

    • @FDNY8231
      @FDNY8231 Месяц назад

      Okay I will NOT tell you that. What I will tell you is YES they messed up, and YES their performance could've been WAY better. It is on them to train and train, and train some more till it becomes second nature. 2:09 seconds for the first drop of water to touch the fire is better than some other departments I've seen in action. 30 seconds would've been better with a deck gun(was OOS) and tank water till hydrant. Even if they had got that Blitzforce going it would've been better.

      Order of operations for a pump operator / fire handline: 1) Park Engine 2) Place into PTO (flip of a switch) 3) place into drive, and ensure 3 green lights illuminated for OK to pump, and speedometer bounce (should be at about the 5 second mark now) 4) exit drivers seat 5) Pull "Tank to Pump" to get water from the onboard tank into the pump, and wait for initial attack line to be stretched. Ensure pump is in "Pressure Mode" (10 second Mark) 6) chock drivers side wheels 7) upon initial line being stretched and placed into position, confirm with the nozzleman they're ready for water and open the discharge. 8) wait for line to fill fully before pressurizing the line to the appropriate pressure to avoid water hammer. 9) Nozzleman opens the nozzle and the pump operator increases pump pressure to the appropriate PSI. (about 30 seconds mark) 10) Monitor onboard tank . Couple of key points to think about and this is by no means the end all on how operations should be done: 1) rule of thumb is most fire engines contain about 500-1000 gallons of water. A single 1.75" handline, flows about 185gpm when operating. That leaves you 2:45min to secure water from a positive water source aka a hydrant. You should try to never stretch more than the initial line before securing positive water. By doing so, you're cutting your onboard water supply by at least 1/2 while reducing your time to get positive water by at least 1/2. 1b) 2.5" hoses flow about 250 GPM, giving you 2 minutes of water 1c) master streams flow about 500-1000 GPM of water giving you 1 min to 30 seconds of water. 2) short staffed firefighting should have their members working in series to accomplish high priority tasks first. All hands should be working to place the INITIAL handline in service, which will have the GREATEST impact on the fire, and increase survivability for victims inside. Initial searches can be done off of the handline. Establishing a positive water supply NEEDS to occur next, to ensure uninterrupted flow. at that point, multiple handlines and master streams may be deployed depending on available water. 3) It seems in this video there were multiple members working in parallel, trying to deploy multiple hand lines off the bat, reducing their overall efficiency. Everyone needs to be on the same page with the overall goal. FAST WATER = GREATER SURVIVABILITY = FASTER INCIDENT STABILIZATION

Million reasons why hair is tied up and tucked away. 1. Very obviously an ignition source 2. Caught in moving machinery 3. Could hinder the seal of your masks etc.
